Student Leadership & Engagement Graduate Assistant for Newcomb Institute SLE Team

TO LEARN MORE: 

The primary function of the Graduate Assistant for Student Leadership and Engagement is to assist the Newcomb Institute SLE team with planning and implementing programs and events related to the portfolio of programs under the SLE team’s responsibility. This Graduate Assistant should gain experience in assessment, leadership development, programming, and event management. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis with a preference for candidates who can start as soon as possible. Compensation is a $4500/semester stipend distributed in biweekly payments. 

Required Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree, Full-time enrollment (9 credit hours) in a graduate program at Tulane University for the duration of the assistantship, Cumulative GPA of at least 3.00, Knowledge and experience working with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Professional software,  Excellent written and oral communication skills, Strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills, and Experience with qualitative and quantitative research and assessment methods, leadership development (preferred). 

Terms of Employment: This position is an appointment for a full academic year with the potential for extension into upcoming school years dependent on the candidate’s degree schedule. The Graduate Assistant will be eligible to work from September 2024 to Friday, May 2, 2025. As a condition of employment and for the convenience of Newcomb Institute, the Graduate Assistant will be asked to commit between 15-20 hours per week. Please note that this position will require some evening and weekend work. This will be a flexible, hybrid role with preferably 10 hours spent in-person. The successful candidate must maintain a 3.00 GPA for the duration of employment.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Student Engagement and Leadership Assistance: • Market PLEN to interested students and coordinate the application process • Oversee student organization participation and support programming • Serve as mentor to Newcomb student leaders • Assist with other leadership activities as needed • Support the creation of the new Leadership Development Program First-Year Programming: • Assist in the facilitation of open house programs and orientation events • Support the Newcomb Peer Mentor Program Assessment and Evaluation: • Collect attendance data from student programming • Generate semester reports on event attendance data • Assist with additional assessment of SLE programming as needed General Newcomb Institute Responsibilities: • Attend regular staff check-in meetings and Student Leadership & Engagement team meetings • Assist in promoting Newcomb Institute at events for admitted students • Perform other duties as assigned

OUTCOMES: Develop a professional understanding of and orientation to the field of women’s leadership in higher education. • Develop skills necessary to be a successful professional, including, but not limited to: Time management, Project Management, Communication and public speaking, Teamwork, Advising, Professionalism and office etiquette, Application of theory to practice, Understand and develop an appreciation for a “generalist” approach to student development through working with various staff within the department on cross-functional projects

EXTERNAL OPPORTUNITIES

The University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice invites applicants for two tenure-track assistant professor positions to begin in August 2025.  

For Position #1: They seek applications from individuals who have, or are near completion of, a doctorate in Sociology or Criminology/Criminal Justice. Doctorate must be earned by the first personnel review in the Spring 2026 semester. Successful candidates must express their dedication to high quality undergraduate education. Specific areas of expertise are open; however, preference will be given to candidates who can teach from a sociological perspective in areas that contribute to our growing Criminal Justice program. Courses taught by the successful candidate will include one of our general education courses (for example, an introductory sociology course or race and ethnicity) one or more courses in our major core curriculum, and electives in their areas of expertise that will add to and complement our Criminal Justice program. Successful applicants will also be expected to develop new elective courses that contribute to our majors and minors in Sociology and Criminal Justice, such as: communities and crime, law, sentencing, community corrections, juvenile justice, or state/corporate crimes.

For Position #2: They seek applications from individuals who have, or are near completion of, a doctorate in Sociology. (Doctorate must be earned by the first personnel review in the Spring 2026 Semester). Successful candidates must express their dedication to high quality undergraduate education and will be expected to teach one or more courses in our core Sociology Major curriculum, one of our general education courses (for example, a course on race and ethnicity), and electives in their areas of expertise.  We seek a scholar with expertise related to illness, health, and healthcare. Preference will be given to candidates who can develop and teach courses in at least one of the following areas: race and ethnic relations, health and illness, mental health, disability, aging, healthcare, and well-being.

Virginia Tech Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Accepting Applications - Fall deadline is November 1

Prospective Postdoctoral Fellows Information Sessions

Virginia Tech’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs will be hosting three Information Sessions for prospective applicants to the program to learn more about the various tracks, how to construct a proposal, and information on how applications are evaluated. In addition, current Virginia Tech Presidential Postdoctoral Fellows will share their experience in this program. There will also be time for questions. University of Michigan Postdoc Opportunities: Virtual Events This Fall

The University of Michigan Medical School is offering two great opportunities for prospective postdocs this fall:

During this fully virtual preview event, candidates will have the opportunity to learn about University of Michigan research resources, professional development support, and hear from current postdocs. Faculty will also receive a book of participants' CVs. This event is free for graduate students and postdocs with a Handshake account.
