Eligible 

PhD students at US institutions conducting dissertation research in NSF-supported fields. International students are eligible. Application submitted by dissertation advisor as lead PI (student is co-PI). 

Stipend / Award 

$15,000–$40,000 in direct research funds (not a personal stipend). Covers fieldwork, data collection, lab costs, and dissertation travel. 

Application 

Submitted through NSF Research.gov by the dissertation advisor. Each NSF division (Sociology, Anthropology, Geography, Political Science, Economics, Psychology, STS, Engineering, and more) has its own solicitation and deadlines. 

Notes 

Not a fellowship — funds project expenses rather than living costs. Some division windows are currently open. Requires an advisor willing to serve as a PI. Check each division's solicitation separately. 

 

SSRC Just Tech Fellowship   ·   Technology & Society · Grad Students & Postdocs · All fields

Eligible 

Researchers, practitioners, artists, journalists, and technologists examine social implications of technology. Any career stage — grad students and postdocs both eligible. Any discipline. International applicants are welcome. 

Stipend / Award 

Competitive stipend for 12-month fellowship (January–December 2027). Includes peer exchange, cohort workshops, and community-building activities.

Notes 

Focus areas: digital governance, AI ethics, equity, democracy, labor, privacy. Welcome non-traditional and interdisciplinary scholars. This is the only application cycle for the 2027 cohort.

AHA Postdoctoral Fellowship   ·   Cardiovascular / Biomedical · Postdoctoral Researchers

Proposals accepted starting July 1, 2026. Deadline: August 5, 2026, at 3:00 PM Central Time. 

Eligible 

Postdoctoral researchers with MD, DO, DVM, PharmD, PhD, or equivalent. Must not yet be independent. Must have a research mentor. Maximum 4 years total AHA postdoc support. A mentor may supervise no more than 4 AHA-funded fellows at a time. 

Stipend / Award 

Stipend matches NIH NRSA postdoctoral rates at proposal opening (~$61,000+/yr) + $12,200/yr health insurance + minimum $1,500/yr conference travel. Duration 1–2 years, renewable to a maximum of 4 years.

Full proposal via AHA Proposal Central at professional.heart.org. Components: research plan, mentor statement, institutional support letter, bio sketch. Preliminary data from mentor's lab acceptable. 

Notes 

A major external biomedical fellowship outside NIH. Strong for cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and related biomedical research. Cannot simultaneously hold an AHA Strategically Focused Research Network position. 

 

AAUW American Dissertation Fellowship   ·   All fields · Graduate Students — Women

Eligible 

Women (and gender minorities) completing the final year of doctoral dissertation writing. All academic fields including STEM. US citizens or permanent residents. Must complete degree by end of fellowship year. 

Stipend / Award 

$25,000 for 12 months of full-time dissertation writing. Non-renewable. Cannot be held simultaneously with Newcombe, NAEd/Spencer, or another AAUW fellowship in the same year.

AAUW Fellowships & Grants Application Portal (aauw.org). Personal statement, research plan, career goals, budget, 2 recommendation letters (1 from dissertation advisor), and Dissertation Certification Form signed by an institutional official. 

Notes 

Established 1888 — oldest non-institutional source of graduate funding for women in the US. STEM and gender-focused research are especially encouraged. Check aauw.org in August 2026 for the exact deadline. 

 

Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy Research Grant   ·   Social Sciences — All Major Fields · Graduate Students — Dissertation Stage

Eligible 

Current PhD or DrPH candidates who have defended their dissertation proposal and are actively working on the dissertation. Must NOT yet hold a PhD. Any country, any university worldwide. No US citizenship is required. 

Stipend / Award 

$10,000 total: $7,500 awarded initially + $2,500 on project completion. Special awards: Irving Louis Horowitz Award (+$5,000 most outstanding project); Trustees' Award (+$3,000 most innovative theory/methodology). Subject-area bonuses are also available. Grants issued immediately on acceptance.

Notes 

Covers all major social science fields: anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, sociology, urban studies, evaluation research. Preference for policy-relevant topics. Non-renewable; recipients have 5 years to complete the project.

Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship   ·   Humanities / Social Sciences · Graduate Students — Final Dissertation Year

Portal opens August 1, 2026. Deadline: November 1, 2026. Finalists submit full proposals and letters by February 2027. Notifications April 2027. 

Eligible 

PhD candidates at US institutions in the final dissertation writing year. Humanities and social sciences. Dissertation must engage ethics or religious values broadly interpreted. Must be ABD with all pre-dissertation requirements completed by November 1. 

Stipend / Award 

$31,000 for 12 months of full-time dissertation writing. Institution asked to waive tuition and fees while maintaining health insurance. Non-renewable. At least 22 fellowships are awarded annually. 

Application 

Online portal at newcombefoundation.org (Program Key: CWNF). Two-stage process: initial open submission by November 1, then finalists submit full proposal and 2 letters of recommendation. Confirm institution will waive tuition before applying. 

Notes 

Ethics/religious values framing is broad — policy ethics, cultural values, moral history, religion, and related social science topics all qualify. Previous ACLS, AAUW, Ford, Mellon, Spencer, or Whiting dissertation fellowship holders are not eligible. 

 

 

Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR)   ·   All Scientific / Engineering Fields · Graduate Students

Applications open July 1, 2026. Deadline: October 1, 2026. Also, a spring cycle: March 15 annually. 

Eligible 

Graduate students in any science or engineering field at any accredited institution worldwide. Non-members are eligible for up to $1,000. Sigma Xi members (or students whose advisor is a member) are eligible for up to $5,000. 

Stipend / Award 

$500–$5,000 for Sigma Xi members; up to $1,000 for non-members. Special funds: up to $5,000 for astronomy research; up to $2,500 for vision research — both open regardless of membership status.

Online portal at sigmaxi.org. Short research proposal, itemized budget, and one faculty reference letter. Applications open July 1, 2026, for the fall cycle. 

Notes 

Covers field travel, research materials, and non-standard equipment. Cannot fund stipends, conference attendance, publication costs, or standard lab supplies already available in labs. One of the most accessible small research grants in any scientific field. 

 

APS Franklin Research Grants   ·  Humanities / Social Sciences · Postdoctoral Researchers / Early-Career Faculty

October 1, 2026 (for work beginning February 2027+). December 1, 2026 (for work beginning April 2027+). Notifications January and March 2027 respectively. 

Eligible 

Postdoctoral scholars and early-career faculty with a completed doctorate. PhD candidates are NOT eligible. US citizens, residents, or foreign nationals affiliated with a US institution. May reapply after a 2-year interval. 

Stipend / Award 

Up to $6,500 for archival travel, fieldwork, microfilm, or field research materials. Add-ons available: APS/British Academy (+$2,500, research at British Library); APS/IASH Edinburgh (up to $6,500, 2–4 months in Scotland).

Online APS portal at amphilsoc.org. Project narrative, itemized budget, and 2 reference letters. Indicate interest in add-on fellowships at the time of application. 

Notes 

Cannot fund conference attendance, home living expenses, stipend replacement, or equipment. Most useful for targeted archival or field travel. Grants made to individuals, not institutions. 

 

Wenner-Gren Dissertation Fieldwork Grant   ·   Anthropology — All Subfields · Graduate Students

November 1, 2026 (for project start July 1 – December 31, 2027). Portal opens September 1, 2026. Review takes ~6 months; decisions by May 2027. Also: May 1 annual cycle. 

Eligible 

PhD students in anthropology (biological, cultural, linguistic, or archaeological) enrolled in any doctoral program worldwide. Any nationality. Must be currently enrolled. Cannot hold another active Wenner-Gren award simultaneously. 

Stipend / Award 

Up to $25,000 for dissertation of fieldwork costs. No overhead or indirect costs paid to the institution. Can span multiple research phases. Nonrenewable. 

Application 

Online portal at wennergren.org. Project abstract, 6 project question responses, detailed budget, bibliography, and dissertation advisor letter. Applications must be in English. ~50% pass Stage 1; finalists reviewed by a 3-person panel. 

Notes 

The largest dedicated anthropology dissertation grant. Separate Post-PhD Research Grant (up to $25,000) available for postdocs on the same deadlines. Cannot hold simultaneously with any other Wenner-Gren award. 

 

Wenner-Gren Post-PhD Research Grant   ·   Anthropology — All Subfields · Postdoctoral Researchers

Postdoctoral anthropologists conducting original research. Any nationality. Must not have another active Wenner-Gren award at the time of application.

Up to $25,000 for original anthropological research costs. No overhead or indirect costs. Nonrenewable.

APS Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research   ·   Field Sciences · Graduate Students

Eligible 

PhD students for dissertation of fieldwork involving collection of specimens or field data. Master's students, undergraduates, and postdocs NOT eligible for the main track. Any nationality affiliated with a US institution. The parallel Astrobiology track (Nov 3 deadline) IS open to grad students, postdocs, and junior scientists. 

Stipend / Award 

Several hundred dollars to approximately $5,000 depending on travel costs. Covers travel to/from field sites and directly related supply costs. No overhead.

Notes 

Specifically for exploratory field collection — specimens, data, and direct observation. The Astrobiology track (November 3 deadline) is broader and includes postdocs and junior scientists.
